Assignment 1 final synopsis
Lady Dalrymple's Gowns for Proper Young Lady
synopsis
Through this assignment I am looking at the concept of proper as defined by the Macmillan Dictionary, “appropriate for the purpose or situation, considered to be morally good, considered to be real or serious, behaving in a manner that most people would consider correct and polite”
I am challenging the concept of proper by using the historic bell silhouettes contrasted with incredibly childish modern fabric. Proper is therefore being challenged as it relates to modesty, age appropriateness and fabric choice. I am also working with ideas of gender appropriateness, i.e girls are pink, boys are blue.Through this i have also explored my own concept of what is proper in relation to my own personal fashion style.
Children aren’t required to to adhere to the “rules of fashion”. So by using children’s fabric I am attempting to bypass many of the fashion norms.
Within fashion there are also many rules around appropriateness of fabric choice, i.e cute animal prints are for under 5’s and micro-fleece is not right for evening wear. I am challenging these concepts as well.
By challenging these current norms I will try to challenge the rigidity of the modern world.
