pettiskirt sample

my costume friend had this awesome plastic pink dotty fabric that was precut into 15cm wide spools,

so i thought i would have a good at making a pettiskirt out of it,
i tryed to use the shirring foot i had for an industral machine but the feed dogs ended up eating holes in the plastic and i had to use my domistic, with a gather foot,

in industry im pretty sure they would use a special ruffle foot attachment insead of a shirring foot as the plastic wouldn't be in contact with the feed dogs and they would be able to gather one tier and sew it to the next in one go which cut down on the production time alot
also im pretty sure that you can order the plastic fabric from the mill in custom sizes, as its the same for the rolls of tulle and bridal tulle you can get.

i was trying to go for a shorter petti to be scanalis, but because the plastic was 15cm and i did three tiers it ended up being the perfect length for normal skirts.

most lolitas and just general cosplayers/costumes only own a few petticoat because they are just big and hard to store, i have several long cotton pettis for historial, long egl (elenat goth lolita) or long winter and a few are hung up and the rest are suffed into my suitcase,
my lolita pettis which i have about 5, several cupcakes and a few al-lines, the ones i dont were every day are stuffed into a vinage suitcase that i have to sit on to get it to close. >.<
other loli sometimes store them upside down, inside out and upside down, rolled up and put in a box, ect.
so most only own a few generally in black and white
depending on what it was made of eg. tulle, chiffon, organa, cotton
you have the BIG problem of pettis deflating,
the chiffons are the best at not deflating bu that due to the amount of fabric, usaly up to 45m of chiffon in a good one but are heavy and don't breath well so get really hot and stuffly. aslo super expense
organa is good but has a little trouble with deflating but is better than the chiffon on fabric usealy and breathable but still very expense.
tulle is the most common, and the cheapest, which is usealy around $60 it has a problem with being scrachly but that is soved by ether bloomers or a lining. very light and breathable but the major downfall is its very very very pron to deflating.  there are HEAPS of tutorials and questions on how to fuff or deflate pettis also how to store and travel with pettis due to the fact they are very big and poufly

Type of fabric Pro's Cons
Soft tulleKind to the skin, amount of fabric needed can start at about 3,15 yardsFloppy and not very supporting. Not very long lasting
Hard tulleBetter support than soft tulle and also lasts longer than soft tulleScratchy/itchy, not recommended without bloomers
OrganzaVery long lasting and soft Because it's very soft it needs a lot of volume, frays a lot. However some organza's tend to be  scratchy, you'll want to make sure to find a balance between scratchy and soft.
ChiffonLasts foreverRequires a massive amount of fabric to sew, think 40-45 yard. Because chiffon rely's on amount rather than poofiness the petticoats tend to get heavy and not breathe well. Not really suited for summer

the up side of this pettiskirt is that because its plastic it wont deflate and you don't have to worry about it getting wet and losing the pouf which happens sometikmes with tulle another upside is that this pettis double as a skirt and a petticoat which is very very uncommon in lolita and very common in fairy kei

if you wear bloomers you dont have to worry about feel and breathableness
some pettis have drawstring waists but i dislike my pettis that have drawstring waist for a few reasons

have to tie it standing up cause if i tie it siting down i tie it too louse and it falls down but they are normaly too heavy to tie standing up cause its hard to hold the string with all that weight.

you can tie it too tight and it hurts were as an elastic band cant eat your stomgth alive

drawsrting also take awhile to get on were as an elastic waist you can just pull it on adjust it and your good ^.^ elastic is also very common is childrens clothes ^.^
because this pettis is so poufly i've had to store in my hat box with ribbon to keep it shut. ^.^;;;;;;
which  brings up another reason for only owning a few pettis is that they are hard to transpot.

when i fly i wear one of my poufest pettis and my poufest skirt e.g a bustle back skirt  or one with lots of ruffle or lace because they just take up alot of space.
i think most people would say just dont wear loli, to which mine and other lifestyle lolita would say, "no way"
i do have a problem with fitting in the airplane seat because the the amount of pouf, but it usely all fits
i do get lots of stares though going through the mental detecter. almost like they expect somthing to happen, which normally doesn't

lolitas in america really worry about traveling because of the TSA, one of the posts in EGL was a Lolita TSA agent explaining everything about the pat downs and how lolita clothing and stuff like dress and pettis are treated by TSA agent  which is they are normal clothes and they can't ask you take it off.

"Realistically though, Flying and lolita do not mix. Lolita with all that poof is not the best thing to have when you are stuck in a fit or a little space for a few hours. You probably have to sit on your petti as well(which may deflate it a bit), and poofiness may make it awkward to move anywhere like the toliet. Lolita is not very practical for such places.."

it took me about 3 daysish to finish this petti because it took forever to gather all the plastic for the tiers,
